Surrendering to God's Will

Surrendering to God's Will (Lent Devotional)

One stormy night, as the rain lashed violently and the waves roared with unrelenting force, visibility was severely low. The captain of a naval vessel, struggling through the treacherous waters, spotted a faint light ahead.

Seizing the radio, he issued a command:"Vessel ahead, please divert your course 15 degrees to the north to avoid a collision."

A moment later, a calm voice responded:"I recommend that you divert your course 15 degrees to the south to avoid a collision."

The captain, taken aback, reiterated his command:"This is the Captain of a Navy warship. I say again, YOU divert YOUR course!"

The reply came unwaveringly:"No. YOU divert YOUR course."

Now furious, the captain declared:" This is the USS Lincoln, the second-largest aircraft carrier in the Atlantic fleet, with multiple warships escorting us. Change YOUR course, or we will take action!"

After a long pause, the voice on the other end simply stated:"This is a lighthouse. Do as you will."

This well-known anecdote offers a striking picture of our struggle to yield to God’s will.

How often do we find ourselves wrestling with God, insisting that He alter His course to align with ours? Whether in our finances, health, relationships, or future plans, we naturally prefer that His ways conform to our desires rather than the other way around. Like the naval captain, we assert our authority, forgetting that God's purposes are higher, immovable and eternally steadfast. (Isaiah 55:8-9, Malachi 3:6, Isaiah 40:27–28)

Yet, Jesus Himself, in the Garden of Gethsemane, exemplified perfect submission, praying:"Yet not as I will, but as You will." (Matthew 26:39)

If the Son of God, in His moment of greatest anguish, could yield His will to the Father, how much more should we? May we learn to surrender our plans, bow our desires, and trust in the unshakable purposes of our loving Father.

May the gracious and merciful God reveal to you the areas in your life where your plans may be misaligned with His divine purposes.

May He grant you the courage and strength to lay these misaligned plans at His feet, surrendering your will in exchange for His. Lent Devotional Written by Daniel Liu To explore other Lent devotionals from Bartley Christian Church, visit:
