John's Journey of Faith:
John Wong is a first-generation Christian whose faith journey reflects God's redemptive power. As a youth, John despised churchgoers and often mocked the Christian kids around him. With his parents frequently absent, John was left to his own devices and fell into bad company.
In 1994, a teacher became a pivotal figure in his life, teaching him responsibility and inspiring him to focus on his studies and future. Driven by a desire to protect his country and family, John aspired to become a soldier. After graduating from St. Gabriel’s Secondary School in 1998, he worked as an office assistant before enrolling in Polytechnic under the SAF Joint Polytechnic Scheme.
That same year, John encountered Christ for the first time at St. Andrew's Cathedral when his teacher invited him to church. However, his family’s turmoil left him unready to accept Christ fully. In 2000, at Church of Christ the King, John finally gave his life to Jesus. After completing a baptism class, he was baptized on 30th March 2002.
Life took a difficult turn after his mother's passing, causing John to drift away from church. By God’s grace, he returned to Christ in 2007 and began serving faithfully at Changi Methodist Church.
Ministry and Calling:
While serving at Changi Methodist Church, John met his wife, Alethea, through their shared passion for missions. Inspired by God’s call, John entered full-time ministry in 2016 with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA). For the past nine years, he has reached out to Singaporean youth through sports ministry.
As a Christian Sports Minister, John mentors coaches and interns, equipping them to train athletes and lead faith-based devotions. His ministry has borne much fruit, with 19 active FCA small groups gathering weekly across eight regions in Singapore. Each week, John ministers to 200–250 children and youth through sports, using his life’s experiences to connect meaningfully with the younger generation.
In 2018, John was diagnosed with Poly Complex Arthritis, a condition that often causes intense pain. Despite this challenge, he relies on God’s grace to persevere in ministry. In 2024, God opened doors for John to extend his work to special-needs children by partnering with institutions such as Olive Tree. He is now focused on training other sports ministers to bring the gospel to Singapore's heartlands, ensuring the ministry’s growth despite his physical limitations.
Current Ministry and Service:
Today, John actively serves in Bartley Christian Church’s (BCC) community outreach programs in the Bidadari area. He is also a member of the church choir, while Alethea serves faithfully on the MACAM audio team.
John's life is a testimony of God’s faithfulness and transformative power. From despising Christians to leading many to Christ, John continues to trust God to use his life and ministry to advance His kingdom in Singapore.
